Hi und Congratulation to your new Ride.
You are still lookinng für a Garage or someone looking after your Corrado.?

Thats not easy because most of our Ruhrpott Team lives in NRWnear Essen, Bottrop Bochum, an so on.
And thats there we go repairing our cars and have our people. I think its is better to have a mechanic in range than 80km away.

Maybe we can find some Cologne Members to help you.

I keep on looking for you.

Thanks Buggyboy. I have found a local place that actually builds engines and gearboxes for VW. They even have 20 VR6 engines in their warehouse!
I think the repair is going to be expensive though. They diagnosed the conrod bearings on cylinder 1 as kaput. :(
It would still be nice to find a VW Specialist Mechanic to take care of oil changes, fitting modifications etc.

The journals on the shaft themselves or just the shells?

Latter can be done DIY, at least on the 4-cylinder engines. Never worked on the VR6.

Hope it´s just the shells that need replacing.

They took the engine apart on Friday and sent me a report today. A full rebuild of the engine is required. Price quoted was €7000!
I spoke to Vince at Stealth Racing in the UK and he can do the same work for £3000.
So I'm going to get the car transported back to Stealth. I have ADAC Plus membership. Do you think they will recover the car back to the UK for me?

Where is the car registrated? here or in UK?

IB the Past i had the Plus Membership , too, and they brought once my Car to another City to repair it But i don´t know if this will work für another Country.

Normally the Plus Membership takes you home, even from another country, when you have a problem.
Another Problem max be the worth of the car.

It would be the best to ask in an ADAC Station. They can help you much better than I

And an the other hand, wouldn´t it be cheaper to take another VR6 from a Forum or somewhere else.

Maybe i would take the 2,8L VR6 from the Golf3 because this engine should work for a longer time.

Short answer? No!

Long answer: When I crashed my Rado on the Nürburgring some years ago (traumatic experience, I tell you), and after I paid the rip-off merchants on the Ring to tow my car from the Ring to a nearby car park, I contacted the ADAC, quoting my Plus membership number, tow truck soon arrived, but refused to bring my Rado all the way back to the UK. Well, I was anxious to see the chap´s reaction when he asked me where to, to which I responded ¨Coventry, UK, here´s my Plus membership and here is my membership booklet!¨

Erm, he called the operations centre, and indeed, having failed to read all the small print in said booklet, the ADAC refuses to bring your car anywhere, if the cost of doing so exceeds the value of the car!! :erschrecken:

Ah well, I thought, here´s my agreed valuation certificate from my UK insurance, valuing my Rado at the princely sum of 5000 GBP. The ADAC did not accept that certificate (!!), and told me (at 18:00!!) to get a valuation from a German valuer :wuetend: , knowing full well the situation I was in (foreign country, no transport, need to get back to my country of domicile again, and their Plus membership package promising all sorts in these situations: Hotel costs, alternative transport etc.). My initial reaction was something like ¨W*nkers!!¨, their Plus package apparently only valid if you have a fairly new car that is still worth a few bob.

Anyway, before I had noticed, the ADAC had more or less driven off with my Rado on the back of a lorry, bringing it to a nearby storage compound. Fortunately :massa: a very good mate from this forum (OSler) helped me out by contacting another mate on this forum (Ulf), who happens to run a nearby bodyshop, and Ulf volunteered to collect my Rado from the ADAC compound the next morning, and trailered it to his bodyshop somewhere south of Bonn, where he performed magic on my Rado, which is now shiny and healthy again ;super:

In hindsight not a bad thing that the ADAC refused to take my Rado back to Coventry, as Ulf did work that no other bodyshop would have ever done so immaculately.

What??? :erschrecken: What did the report state then?

I've searched around online and found mixed reports of UK ADAC members either being recovered to the UK without issue or being flatly refused. It seems it depends upon the agent dealing with the request and perhaps on the circumstances surrounding the car's demise. In your case they probably didn't want to set a precedent for all UK drivers to come and use the Ring carte blanche.
I'm going to see the technician in charge today. Hopefully we can negotiate on price and I won't need to explore the ADAC option.
