It will polish out…. Don’t you think?

Beitrag von Doug Teulie »

This is Randy’s MK1 S. His wife was driving it and was involved in a head on accident. The seventeen year old in the other car was 100% at fault. The impact was about 70-80 MPH. Randy’s wife (driver) is OK but the passenger suffered rearview mirror to forehead interface cuts (due to not having the seat belt on). The driver’s side frame rail is in bad shape, shock tower has parted with the inner fender and the fire wall door frame area looks displaced. The driver’s door is compressed as is the body in that area. Randy cut the fender so the front wheel would turn. The passenger motor mount is bent and so is the core support. The radiator parts are trash now. Randy is looking for a shell to cut up or to rebuild. I think this MK1 needs some rubbing compound and a touchup.

Lars quote
"By the way, did you get the DVD?"

Yes it is great! I have watched it a few times. Nice collection of pictures and video. You did a very nice job. I like the pictures of Kathy and me in your GTII. Thank you for letting us drive your fine machine on the ring. The extra ring clips are great too.

As far as the MK1 in the first post holding up in the crash goes, I think it did what it is designed to do. In the USA our cars came with enormous bumpers. You can see how twisted this one got as it folded under the car. That bumper has impact shocks and an extra reinforcement between the brackets that is stronger than the Euro version MK1 bumper in total. I don’t think the US bumper did anything more to save the car or the driver than a Euro bumper would have. The extra over kill bumper just added more mass to slam into the motor. The passenger compartment is quite intact. No foot injuries. The dash is bent form the passenger’s body and the steering wheel is collapsed some.

Randy is very depressed over this but he is still smiling. He is determined to drive a MK1 for the rest of his life. Randy has been driving this MK1 Scirocco for 26+ years and he is the 1st owner of this 1980 Scirocco S. Randy was going to do a full restoration on this MK1 prior to the accident. He had the painter all set to start the work and he had the replacement parts to do the job. He even fabricated seals for the restoration.

If you like the DVD and the other stuff it´s fine for me.

Some closer looks at the Mk1 told me, it would be hopeless if there´s no frontcut to make one car out of two.
I´m feeling sorry for your friends and the car, 26 years is really a long time.
It´s a little bit like a good friend has gone i think.

It will be hard to get an other Mk1 as a replacement for it, I wish him good luck.

Once again, really sorry to see what's happened to Randy's Mk1 and I hope that his wife has no nasty health effects coming after the crash (e.g. whiplashes tend to appear up to weeks after such an incident).

Good luck to Randy on his search for another Mk1.

OK I found this one on my hard drive. I have no idea who's MK1 this was.
Do you think it will polish out? I think no!

We will see if I get this project.
At this point I need to finish the silver car that you see on my shelf.
That is my 76 FI conversion project. (red car is my old 81 that is now in a barn and is not my 80)

I worked on this car and got it running in just over 40 hours after the .....???(no sleep). It does not look a big project but all the interior needed to be removed, the wires were gone, the seats were trashed, the dash needed to be replaced, the windows were black with char, and the rear glass and tail lights were all gone.

Do you think it will polish out? It did!
